HAZOP Analysis for Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, and Mining/Metallurgical Projects

JSC "Bureau Veritas Rus" is expanding its HAZOP analysis practice for projects in the oil and gas industry, petrochemicals, and the mining and metallurgical sector.

HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) helps identify critical deviations in technological processes, substantiate industrial safety decisions, and reduce the risk of comments during the review of design documentation.

For complex industrial facilities, the quality of hazard analysis directly affects the robustness of design decisions, approval timelines, and the likelihood of documentation being sent back for revision. As a result, HAZOP analysis is increasingly applied as an industry standard for oil and gas, petrochemicals, and mining/metallurgical enterprises (metallurgical plants, ore-processing plants).

Why HAZOP Matters

Russian legislation does not directly mandate HAZOP analysis; however, regulatory documents require completeness, systematic rigor, and traceability of hazard analysis when developing design documentation and documentation for technical retrofitting. This involves identifying hazards, analyzing deviations in process parameters, modelling emergency scenarios, and substantiating the effectiveness of the emergency shutdown protection system.

In practice, this is especially important for facilities with elevated technological and industrial hazard levels, where insufficient risk assessment can result in expert review comments, project delays, and increased costs.

Which Facilities It Applies To

For oil and gas projects, HAZOP analysis is applied during hydrocarbon extraction, processing, and transportation, including at oil and gas treatment facilities, compressor stations, and booster pumping stations. It helps identify risks of depressurization, releases, equipment failures, and process upsets.

For petrochemicals, HAZOP is used to analyze leaks, uncontrolled reactions, fires, and explosions, as well as to substantiate the architecture of emergency shutdown protection, including SIL-based solutions. For mining and metallurgical enterprises (metallurgical plants, ore-processing plants), this analysis helps assess the resilience of process chains and the risks of gas release, dust explosions, and high-temperature processes.
